Programs
NAWIC San Diego partners with the Future Construction Leaders, a 501(c)(3), to educate young people about the opportunities in the construction industry. Together, we have awarded thousands of dollars in trade and collegiate scholarships and raised awareness among San Diego youth about the many careers in construction. Below is a summary of the youth programs with links to the Future Construction Leaders website for more information.
Block Kids Building Program
Each year the local NAWIC chapters sponsor a free, nationwide Block Kids Building Program. It challenges students from kindergarten to 6th grade to use their imagination in constructing a structure or project using interlocking blocks and three of the following additional items: a small rock, string, foil, and poster board. By introducing children to construction industry careers at an early age, we are hoping to create awareness and develop their interest in future careers in the industry.

FCL Camp for Teen Girls (formerly Camp NAWIC)
The Future Construction Leaders (FCL) Camp for Teen Girls (formerly Camp NAWIC San Diego) provides a unique, week-long, hands-on approach to construction careers for girls in grades 8-12 at no cost to the participants. Campers learn the basic elements of various construction trades and develop a “can-do” attitude they can apply in many aspects of their lives. Seasoned mentors and role models are on hand to support them every step of the way. Campers will explore various areas of construction such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, landscaping, heavy equipment, and more.
Don’t miss out! Campers, sponsors and volunteers needed.
Design Drafting Competition
The Design Drafting Competition challenges San Diego County high school and college students to address a design problem created by a licensed architect or engineer. Participants must demonstrate creative designs, craftsmanship, and successful problem-solving skills through the preparation of architectural drawings and renderings.
Local winners are recognized at the annual NAWIC San Diego awards dinner. They may also go on to compete at the regional and national level, where they are eligible for additional prizes.

Collegiate & Trade Scholarships
We grant at least three scholarships annually to deserving recipients. One scholarship is dedicated to a male or female student pursuing any college degree who has a parent employed in the San Diego construction industry. The second scholarship is awarded to a female student pursuing a college degree in a construction-related profession such as architecture, engineering, or construction management. The final scholarship is for an individual in the San Diego construction industry who is currently enrolled in or seeking future education or training in a construction trade.
