October Membership Meeting: Building Africa in San Diego

October 11, 2016, 5:30pm - October 11, 2016, 8:30pm

Riverwalk Golf Club 1150 Fashion Valley Rd. San Diego, CA 92108

The featured subject at our San Diego Chapter dinner meeting will be a presentation of the largest San Diego Zoo construction project ever commissioned. The project Exhibit is called “Africa Rocks” and involves many African creatures on this 16-acre site. This project involves many new buildings, and creates extensive new pathways and landscape features. It will include several different typographies from coastal to inland Africa, Steve Fobes with San Diego Zoo Global will be presenting details about this project, process and unique challenges encountered throughout the design phase.
When the exhibit opens in 2017, Africa Rocks will entirely transform the area that was previously a steep canyon. Africa Rocks’ gently winding, ADA-accessible pathway will lead guests through different types of African habitats—including a West African forest, acacia woodlands, Ethiopian highlands, kopje gardens and a Madagascar habitat.
Africa Rocks will be a home to mammals, reptiles, birds, and plant life native to Africa. The exhibit will feature a range of primates, including hamadryas and gelada baboons, vervet monkeys, and lemurs. Other mammals in the exhibit will include southern ratel, fossa and an African leopard.
